~Admiralty~

The firm has handled a large number of maritime claims cases and arrested vessels in the enforcement of such claims.

The firm represented Chinese Petroleum Corporation jointly with other firms and succeeded in claiming losses against ship owners on account of oil spill, which was the very first case in the R.O.C. waters.

The firm has represented P&I Clubs and succeeded in claiming indemnity from marine insurance companies.

~Foreign Investment~

The firm acted for Conoco Corp. in their joint effort with Chinese Petroleum Corporation to make oil exploration in the R.O.C. waters. More than 30 million U.S. dollars and immense manpower was invested in the exploration. It was the only off-shore exploration project of the Chinese Petroleum Corp. successful at that time and was announced at the New York Stock Exchange. It is believed that the East Sea oil field of the P.R.C. may be of the same structure as the said exploration.

When the business of ship scrap in Taiwan was at its peak, nearly two thirds of the business pertaining to matters of the

nationality and finance of vessels were handled by Huang & Partners.

major domestic shipping companies such as Cheng Lie Navigation Co., Ltd., Chun Sine Marine Co., Ltd., Kien Hung Shipping Co., Ltd., Eddie Steamship Company, Ltd., First Steamship Co., Ltd. and Hsin Chien Marine Co., Ltd., have retained Huang & Partners to take care of matters regarding ship finance.

The firm is also well-experienced in handling registration of flag of convenience for vessels at home and abroad.

The firm also acts for world-eminent owners' associations and shipping companies to enforce arbitral awards in the R.O.C. and provide legal opinions on Maritime Matters issues.

~Insurance, Banking and Securities~

Since the 1970s, many foreign banks and insurance companies started to establish branch offices in Taiwan. Huang & Partners played an active role in providing legal services to those foreign investors.

The firm acted for Insurance Company of North America, the first foreign insurance company in Taiwan to complete registration of its Taiwan branch office.

The firm acted for Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CIGNA), the pioneering foreign life insurance company in Taiwan to obtain approval of incorporation of its branch office in Taiwan.

The firm acted for Munichre Reinsurance Company, the first foreign reinsurance company in Taiwan to complete registration of its liaison office in Taiwan.

The firm acted for Johnson & Higgins, Inc., now called Marsh Ltd., which was the first foreign insurance broker to obtain approval of establishment of its Taiwan branch office from the Ministry of Finance.

The firm acted for Thomas Howell Group (Overseas) Ltd., now called Crawford (Taiwan) Ltd., which was the first foreign insurance surveyor in Taiwan to obtain approval of establishment of its Taiwan branch office from the Ministry of Finance.

The firm acted for Gerling-Konzern Globale in Germany, the first foreign re-insurance company in the world to obtain approval of registration of its Taiwan liaison office.

The firm acted for Lloyds Bank plc to obtain approval of establishment of its Taiwan branch office from the Ministry of Finance.

The firm successfully assisted Bank of Communications in a stock transfer transaction.

The firm assisted Taiwan Power Company to obtain a syndicated loan from banks.

The firm provides legal assistance in the issue of GDRs, ADRs and corporate bonds for foreign clients and domestic companies such as Yageo Corporation, Hecheng Corporation, First International Computer Inc. and Evergreen Marine Corp. The firm has promoted automobile technology cooperation. The firm assisted Isuzu Motors Ltd. to incorporate Taiwan Isuzu Motors Co., Ltd. in Taiwan.

The firm has represented many Fortune 500 companies to establish their presence with foreign investment approval status in Taiwan.

The firm has assisted Standards & Poor's International Ratings, Ltd., a member of McGraw-Hill Group in its investment in incorporation of Taiwan Ratings Corporation, which was the first and is the only rating company in Taiwan.

The firm has represented German, Japanese, French and Korean engineering companies to participate in the

construction project of Taipei MRT system at different stages.

The firm has participated in major global mergers and acquisitions involving Taiwan legal entities and having significant impact thereon, such as the merger of USM and Texon.

The firm has represented LG Electronics, Inc. to acquire Taistar Electronics Co., Ltd., which is now called LG Taistar Electronics Taiwan Co., Ltd.

~Intellectual Property~

Huang & Partners has acted for many Fortune 500 companies to apply for patent and trademark/servicemark registrations in Taiwan.

The firm has also assisted many a foreign companies to license of their technology to local companies and promote technical cooperation between local and foreign companies.

The firm has represented famous foreign brands in matters regarding infringement of trademark rights.

~Litigation/Arbitration~

Huang & Partners has handled a good many well-known cases and made significant contributions to the legal practice in Taiwan.

For more than ten years, the firm has acted for the family of the deceased in the Sun Moon Lake accident in 1990 to claim compensation for their losses and petitioned the Council of Grand Justices for interpretation of the State Compensation Law. The Grand Justices rendered an opinion no. 469 which provided the legal basis for recovery under the State Compensation Law.

The same Grand Justice interpretation provided the legal basis for the victims and their family in the cases regarding the tragic fire at The Wilcom Restaurant and the collapse of The Lincoln Mansion to claim under the State Compensation Law.

The firm made many significant efforts for The Lincoln Mansion matter.

The firm acted for Taiwan Power Company in a coal procurement matter.

The firm represented Nantai Line Co., Ltd. in the arbitration in which Taiwan Power Company was involved.

~Matters in the P.R.C.~

Huang & Partners represented clients to institute civil proceedings in Miyun of Hebei Province, P.R.C. and rendered an opinion regarding the separate identity of a juristic person, which was accepted by the court and won the case.

The firm took part in the civil and criminal proceedings relating to a fire at a department store, which took 309 lives in Henan Province, P.R.C., and in a special process of Specialists Debate to protect Taiwan investors' rights and interests in the P.R.C. and promote the advancement of rule of law.

The firm also provided legal assistance to Taiwan investors in the P.R.C., for example, handling disputes incurred from the investment by Shao Xing Engineering Company in Nanjing, assisting in matters regarding investment in power plants and establishing partnership with P.R.C. law offices to provide clients with services of the best quality.
